Tentacle #16 is out

Issue No. 16 of Tentacle, the annual newsletter of the IUCN/Species Survival Commission, Mollusc Specialist Group, edited by Robert Cowie of the University of Hawaii, is now available here, where all the previous issues can also be accessed.

The present issue features notes about the threatened populations of native mollusks as well as introduced land snails in numerous countries, including the U.S., Israel, Poland, Brazil and Malaysia. There are also pieces of a more general nature; for example, one connecting land snail diversity with centers of plant endemism.

Back in August of last year when it was hot and humid outside, I had a cool idea about the winter hibernation of land snails and how that might affect their reproduction and wrote about it in this post. Subsequently, I developed the idea further and it is now included under the title Vernalization requirements of terrestrial gastropods and global warming in Tentacle 16 (p. 17).
