First tick of 2011
The 1st tick of this year made its appearance on Saturday. I normally find at least 1 tick attached to my skin every year. But this one was not yet on my skin; it was crawling on the inside of my raincoat when I saw it. If I hadn't happened to notice it after I took my coat off, it would probably have stayed there and moved on to my skin the next time I wore the coat. So I consider myself lucky this time.
It's the usual deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), a common inhabitant of the woods around here.
I have written about ticks several times before on this blog. The previous 2 tick posts were here and here. Because I go into the woods quite often, I am certain that I will have many more tick tales to tell.

That sends me chills! lol.
I had my first tick of the year this weekend, too. Looked exactly like your one.
camno island has no ticks... that i know of. but mosquitoes are EVERYWHERE. and it's only may.
Ooh! I hear they are everywhere here in Montana but have not seen one personally. How creepy! How do you remove them safely once they are attached?
Love your site!
I hate ticks! Reminds me of that awful moment after being out for an adventure with the dogs when I notice a tick climbing on one. Oh god... now I have to go over every inch of both of them! Stupid ticks.
My field site is crawling with Rocky Mountain Spotted Ticks and we have to be careful about where we stop to eat lunch while we are out there. Once we tried to eat lunch in the shade on the north facing side of our watershed and about 2 minutes later, ticks started raining down on us from above. One even fell right onto the sandwich I was eating. I screamed like a little girl.
I try to be open minded about the creatures of the world, but ... I hate ticks and even the photo gives me the creeps! I found the first two of the season on Sparky the Dog a few days ago.
