A separate question: a friend is keeping a Helix aspersum as a pet. After a mating about 2-3 weeks ago, a bit of tissue protruded from the pneumostome. It was whitish and stuck there until recently when it came off. The snail appears to be fine. Do know now what the tissue could be? I'm guessing a spermatophore. I have a photo if that would help.

A spermatophore would be at the genital opening, which is posterior to the pneumostome. The thing you saw could have been a "love dart", but those things are as hard as the shell itself.
